Why relationship building comes before action

Action taken before relationships are built tends to rest on shallow, temporary participation, people showing up once out of curiosity or obligation rather than genuine commitment, which makes it hard to sustain any effort beyond a single event, however well attended that first event turns out to be. A crowd is not the same thing as a base.
Relationships built first give organisers a real understanding of what people actually care about and are willing to commit to, which produces action that reflects genuine community priorities rather than an outside assumption about what an issue's response should look like from a distance. That understanding cannot be shortcut or rushed.
This sequencing takes patience that can feel frustrating when an issue feels urgent, but the relationships built during that patient period are usually what allow a campaign to sustain pressure over the months or years that real, lasting change often actually requires from everyone involved. Patience here is a genuine strategic investment.
