Before donating to a campaign, it is reasonable to check that it is genuinely operating as described, whether through a registered charity number, a clear public track record, or simply a transparent, verifiable account of how funds will actually be used. That check takes only a few minutes to complete.

Scammers sometimes exploit genuine public concern about real issues by creating convincing but fraudulent appeals, which makes a moment of independent checking, rather than donating purely on the strength of an emotional appeal, a sensible habit worth keeping. Emotion is exactly what a fraudulent appeal is designed to exploit, deliberately and quite effectively.

Genuine campaigns generally welcome this kind of scrutiny, since it protects their own reputation as much as it protects potential donors, and any reluctance to answer basic verification questions plainly deserves real caution before committing any money. A genuine cause has nothing at all to lose from that reasonable scrutiny.
