Attending an event with at least one other person gives you someone to check in with, someone who knows where you are, and support if a situation becomes uncomfortable or confusing, all of which are harder to manage entirely alone. Company, in an unfamiliar setting, is a genuinely simple safeguard.
A buddy arrangement does not need to be elaborate, simply agreeing in advance to stay aware of each other and to leave together if either person wants to, which provides a meaningful layer of practical safety at very little cost. That small agreement is easy to make and easy to keep.
Organisers can support this practice by actively encouraging participants to pair up, particularly for anyone attending an unfamiliar event alone, since a simple prompt at the start of an event can make this kind of safety habit far more likely to actually happen. A brief announcement is often all it takes.
