A treasurer keeps track of a campaign's income and expenses, ensures bills are paid and donations are properly recorded, and provides regular, clear updates so the rest of the team knows where the campaign genuinely stands financially at any given time. That regular update keeps everyone else honestly informed, not just reassured.

In a small campaign, the treasurer role is often filled by a volunteer, which makes clear expectations and reasonable workload particularly important, since an overwhelmed volunteer treasurer can quietly become a serious risk to the campaign's financial health. Supporting that person properly is itself a form of financial risk management.

Even in an informal campaign, having someone clearly responsible for financial tracking, rather than leaving it to whoever happens to handle a particular transaction, avoids the confusion and potential disputes that unclear financial responsibility so often produces later on. Naming that responsibility explicitly costs nothing and prevents a great deal of confusion.
