Short term indicators capture immediate, visible signs of activity or early shift, useful for tracking progress along the way toward a distant goal. Long term indicators capture the deeper, slower change a campaign ultimately hopes to produce, which often only becomes visible well after the campaign itself has ended. Both tell part of a larger, slower moving story.

Relying only on short term indicators risks mistaking early momentum for lasting change, while relying only on long term indicators can leave a campaign with no meaningful feedback until it is far too late to adjust its approach in any useful way before resources run out.

Tracking both together, short term signals as a working guide and long term indicators as the ultimate test, gives a campaign useful feedback along the way while still holding itself accountable to the deeper change it actually set out to achieve from the outset of the effort.
