The difference between activism and personal risk taking
Launch library · evergreen read

Activism involves working toward a shared goal, often alongside others, within a considered understanding of what a given action realistically involves. Personal risk taking can happen alongside activism, but it is a distinct choice that deserves its own separate, honest consideration. The two are related but should never be assumed identical.
Conflating the two can lead someone to accept a level of personal risk they have not genuinely thought through, simply because it feels bound up with commitment to a cause they care about deeply. Genuine commitment does not require accepting every possible risk uncritically or without question, whatever the cause happens to be.
Being clear with yourself about which risks a particular action actually involves, and whether you are genuinely comfortable with them, allows for a more honest, sustainable form of involvement than treating any hesitation as a lack of commitment to the cause itself. Hesitation is simply honest information worth respecting.
