The difference between a trend and a single data point

A single data point is a snapshot: one measurement at one moment in time, nothing more. A trend describes a pattern across several such measurements over time, and it is the trend, not any one point within it, that usually tells you whether something is genuinely changing at all.

Reacting strongly to a single new data point, without checking whether it fits the wider trend or breaks from it entirely, is a common source of overreaction in public debate, since any one measurement can be pulled up or down by short term or unusual factors unrelated to the trend.

Waiting for a pattern to emerge across multiple measurements, rather than treating the latest figure as the whole story on its own, gives a more reliable read on whether something is actually shifting or whether the latest number is simply ordinary variation around a stable trend already established, rather than a genuine break from it worth reporting on.
