How campaign badges and symbols developed over time

A simple badge or symbol lets a supporter signal their involvement in a campaign quickly and visibly, without needing to explain their position at length, which is part of why campaigns have long invested effort in developing a clear, recognisable visual identity. That visibility does real, quiet persuasive work of its own, long before any argument is even made.
Over time, effective campaign symbols tended to share certain qualities: they were simple enough to reproduce cheaply, distinctive enough to be recognised at a glance, and flexible enough to be worn, displayed or shared in many different contexts. Meeting all three qualities at once was never entirely straightforward.
As production and distribution methods changed, the format of these symbols changed with them, moving from simple physical badges toward digital versions that can spread online, though the underlying purpose, instant, wordless recognition, has stayed largely the same. The format shifted considerably, but the underlying function plainly did not.
